Crete NE Real Estate, Crete area and Community Information
Crete, Nebraska, is a community of about 7,000 residents in Saline County. Crete is located southwest of the state capital of Lincoln. Crete Municipal Airport is just east of town. Crete is the home of Doane College, the oldest four-year liberal arts institution in the state. The 300-acre campus includes a number of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
History
Jesse Bickle and his family settled along the Big Blue River in 1863. They soon learned that higher ground provided a better location for a new two-room cabin, so they moved soon thereafter. In the early days, settlers decided to file homestead claims here on the fertile land along the Big Blue River. The profusion of maple trees along the river resulted in the town initially being named Mapleton. When Bickle platted the town in 1870, he renamed it Blue River City. It was ultimately named Crete, after a community of the same name in Illinois.
Parks and Recreation

The 96-acre Tuxedo Park is the largest of Crete's parks. It is located on the Blue River in the northwest part of town. It includes lighted volleyball courts, baseball diamonds, horseshoe pits and picnic facilities. A hiking trail becomes a cross-country ski trail in the winter.
Olive Creek Lake State Park is set on the shore of a reservoir that is 1.2 miles long. The lake offers over four miles of shoreline. Boating is allowed, although the speed limit is 5 mph. This nearby state facility offers those with Crete NE homes good recreational opportunities, including hiking and picnicking.
